Stateless Mind

Neither Here nor There,
but Everywhere

The Stateless Mind Pavilion (SMP) explores forms of identity and belonging that exist beyond fixed national, cultural, or geographic frameworks. It addresses the lived realities of displacement, migration, and in-between belonging, where individuals navigate multiple cultural and social contexts without fully aligning with a single one.

The Pavilion is developed through a Nordic–Southeast Asian collaboration led by Jambatan, in partnership with the Center for Arts, Design, and Social Research and Kapallorek Artspace. Its curatorial approach is collective and process-oriented, emphasizing shared authorship, distributed decision-making, and the coexistence of diverse perspectives rather than a unified narrative.

Presented at Seeum in Gwangju, the Pavilion functions as an adaptive platform, activated through installations, performance, sound, and public programming. A key component is Stateless Processions—guided walks through the city that frame movement as both an artistic and a critical method, encouraging alternative readings of urban space in relation to visibility, access, and control.

Rejecting the conventional model of national representation, SMP positions itself as a transnational, artist-led platform. It builds on previous initiatives such as the Stateless Mind Festivals and international residency collaborations, extending these networks into the Biennale context and beyond. Conceived as a transferable framework, the Pavilion can be adopted and reactivated by artist-led spaces, collectives, and organizations across diverse contexts. In doing so, it continues to evolve as an ongoing, distributed platform for exchange. Rather than proposing a fixed institutional model, SMP offers a sustainable framework for rethinking belonging, authorship, and collaboration both within and beyond the Biennale.

무국적 정신 파빌리온(Stateless Mind Pavilion, SMP)은 국가와 문화, 그리고 지리적 경계를 가볍게 넘어서는 다층적 정체성의 가능성을 집요하게 탐구한다. 전시는 이주와 유목적 이동, 그리고 그 불확실한 사이 공간에서 새롭게 피어나는 소속감의 문제를 정면으로 다룬다. 하나의 고정된 문화나 공동체에 완결되게 속하지 않은 채, 복합적인 삶의 정황을 오가는 이들의 신체적·정신적 경험이 바로 이 전시를 관통하는 출발점이다. 이번 파빌리온은 얌바탄(Jambatan)의 주도 아래 예술·디자인·사회연구센터 및 카팔로렉 아트스페이스가 협력해 완성한 북유럽과 동남아시아의 초국가적 공동 프로젝트다. 전남 광주 씨움에서 펼쳐지는 전시는 획일적이고 단일한 서사를 일방적으로 제시하기보다는 공동 저작(co-authorship)과 분산된 의사결정 체계, 다채로운 관점의 평등한 공존을 구조적 중심에 놓는다. 이에 따라 공간은 입체적 설치와 퍼포먼스, 공감각적 사운드, 다양한 참여형 공공 프로그램을 결합한 가변적 모듈형 플랫폼으로 조율된다. 그중에서도 대표적인 프로그램인 ‹무국적 행진›은 관람객과 창작자가 도시의 실제적 시공간을 함께 거닐며 ‘이동’이라는 행위 자체를 미학적이면서도 비판적인 실천으로 재정의한다. 이 실천적 행진은 현대 도시 공간이 지닌 통제의 기점과 가시성의 영역, 물리적·제도적 접근성의 한계를 새로운 시선으로 재인식하게 한다. 이렇듯 SMP는 기존 비엔날레의 전형인 ‘국가관’ 형태의 경직된 틀을 과감히 탈피해 작가 주도적이자 초국가적인 대안적 플랫폼을 명확히 지향한다. 앞서 성공적으로 전개된 ‘무국적 정신 페스티벌’과 국제 레지던시 네트워크를 바탕으로 구축된 이들의 협력망은 비엔날레 제도의 안팎을 넘나들며 세계 어디로든 이동하고 이식될 수 있는 유기적 구조를 제시한다. 나아가 이 파빌리온은 서로 다른 맥락을 지닌 전 세계의 예술가 주도 공간, 독립 컬렉티브, 대안 기관들과 함께 언제든 재선택되거나 재활성화될 수 있는 지속적이고 분산된 교류 플랫폼으로 진화하고 있다. SMP는 이번 파빌리온에서 예술의 소속감과 저작권, 진정한 의미의 협업 방식을 재상상하도록 이끄는 혁신적이고 지속 가능한 미래 모델을 제시해 보인다.

Gwangju Biennale Pavilion — About the Gwangju Biennale Pavilion

Inaugurated in 2018 with the mission of fostering networks among domestic and international art and cultural institutions, the Gwangju Biennale Pavilion has driven a dynamic range of exhibitions and educational initiatives deeply rooted in local collaboration. This initiative not only deepens visitors’ engagement with art but also infuses the entire city with cultural inspiration.

For the upcoming 16th Gwangju Biennale Pavilion in 2026, diverse countries, cities, and institutions from Asia, the Americas, and Europe will take part. These global art entities are set to present a dynamic spectrum of pavilions throughout Gwangju, spanning historic and cultural sites in Yanglim, Geumnam, Yongbong, and the Seogu/Gwangsan districts. Resonating with the 16th Gwangju Biennale’s main theme, You must change your life, these pavilions will curate distinct artistic narratives that reflect each institution’s own perspectives. Through these site-specific presentations, they will engage deeply with local citizens, connect with international audiences, and generate rich visual landscapes and discourse throughout the urban landscape.

2018년 국내외 미술 및 문화 기관의 네트워크 확장을 목표로 시작된 광주비엔날레 파빌리온은 지역사회와 긴밀히 소통하며 다양한 전시 및 교육 프로그램을 개발해 왔다. 이를 통해 관람객의 예술적 경험을 확장하는 것은 물론, 도시 전체에 새로운 활기를 불어넣고 있다.

오는 2026년 제16회 광주비엔날레 파빌리온에는 아시아, 미주, 유럽 대륙의 다양한 국가와 예술 기관들이 참여한다. 이 글로벌 예술 주체들은 양림권, 금남권, 용봉권, 서구·광산권역 등 광주 전역에서 다채로운 파빌리온을 선보일 예정이다. 특히 제16회 광주비엔날레의 핵심 주제인 너는 네 삶을 바꿔야 한다(You must change your life)와 공명하면서도, 각 기관의 다각적인 시선이 담긴 특색 있는 전시를 구축함으로써 시민들과 호흡하고 국제 관객과 소통하며, 도시 전역에 풍부한 시각적 경험과 담론을 생산해 낼 것이다.

Artnet highlighted the Gwangju Biennale’s exceptional attendance numbers, robust operational framework, international influence, and rigorous curatorial expertise as key factors driving its high global stature.

광주비엔날레는 미술 전문 미디어 ‘아트넷(Artnet)’에 의해 베니스 비엔날레, 카셀 도쿠멘타, 휘트니 비엔날레, 마니페스타와 어깨를 나란히 하는 ‘세계 5대 비엔날레’ 중 하나로 선정되며 그 국제적 위상을 공고히 했다. 이는 광주비엔날레의 압도적인 관람객 동원력과 탄탄한 재정적 운영 모델, 국제적 영향력, 그리고 전문적인 큐레이터십을 세계적으로 인정받은 결과다.
